Holiday greetings from the ghost of Kommandant's past.
Nice to see NJG7 is still around in spirit.

About the only sim/game I find time for these days is Red Orchestra and only offline play.
Glad to see I am not the sole survivor of the Uhu:-)

Its a WWII game(altho the equipment is pretty close to being sim quality). Both tank and infantry types with some of the best WWII game models and ballistics I have seen. Worlds above Call of Duty as far as real world ballistics on the rifles, etc. Tank on tank play is outstanding against pretty decent AI and infantry play is almost as good. My favorite infantry weapon is the Panzerfaust and I go up against T-34's and ISU's with me taking them out most of the time.
If you like tanking, the German side has Tigers, MarkIII's, MarkIV's(F-H and D models), Panthers, APC and a STUGIII. Russians have T-34's,ISU's, KV1, and another heavy type and several lighter types of tanks along with a SP assault gun and APC's and armored cars.
Infantry weapons are the KAR98, MP42, MG42,Kar98 Sniper rifle, Panzerfaust, Lugers, P-38's and grenades on the German side with MosinNarget rifles, Submachine guns, pistols, grenades, etc on the Russian side. Also the Russkies have a 14.5mm antitank rifle(outdated on anything past a MarkII unless you go for rear end shots.
You can play almost every position inside the tanks and physics wise, its a sim. Decent graphics and single-multiplayer modes. If you are a tank buff, the AP rounds are realistic and using HE against infantry hurls them up into the air like ragdolls.
Only things missing are Artillery and Air support but those would detract from the game play. If you are a armor freak, it will blow your boots off to play this one.
Tanks always were my first love, followed by planes:-)

I stand corrected, there is artillery in the game, just sorta limited to some of the missions and tied to static radios.

Whoops! It seems I'm missing something running here! Herr Berserker, though completely out of time, back to you my holiday greetings... oh, well, they could be valid for next year, at this point. I think I have to tell the mates (Fledermaus, Dutchman, Deenee)you showed up here: I'm sure they will be happy. Since time a part of us moved to Com-Central flying exclusively civil sims, but though we aren't into the combat arena, we brought there the Uhu spirit, and keep it well alive. I hope in a not distant future a new combat sim will be released that will make all of us gather together again... I foresee, I foresee... CFS4? LOL! Alpenrose, I'm guilty, and I promise I'll look into here more often, and if I see there's "movement" enough, I can even dare to re-install the IL2/FB/AEP/WYSIWYG brigade once again. I miss the old times. Cheers! Marco

Lol, Alpi, censorship is always there round the corner: if you're bold enough, try typing the word with an underscore between each two letters and it should pass, like this: p_o_o... The "wysywyg" matter doen's mean anything in fact: it was just my way to underline the fact that the overlapping of always new packages and upgrades and patches, makes having a matching install of IL2 a crazy affair. I'm getting older, no more enough patience to keep the pace There's nothing wrong in IL2 - I even took a pilot certificate at the Joint Operation flight school to get the grip on it. It's a great sim, I'm aware, but somehow I never managed to get a feeling with it. Trying many times to explain myself the reasons why, I came to two different kinds of conclusion - technical and historical. On one side, I don't find IL2 fitting for night fighting activities: darkness is never full darkness, planes are the wrong ones, when you shoot you are blinded because there are not flame dampers... it's frustrating. On the other side, most of the maps are placed on the eastern side of Europe, which (I can understand this) might be of great interest for you, but it has no attraction to me. Also, the landscape reflects this, and though it's very well represented, it's not exactly the environment I expect to find when I take off. Shortly, I find myself out of place. Maybe this will look too strict on my side, but what makes me still feel proud of being a member of the NJG7 is its peculiarity, that is, the fact it takes a snapshot of a very particular fighting situation in a particular historical situation - and I'm avoiding to go on with details 'cause I don't want to bore you. To end it up, if I can't fight the NJG7 way, I feel more comfortable flying civil simulators, at least until a new combat sim will be released matching "our" requirements. Cfs3 did, but had so many limitations and faults and drawbacks that it was a pain in the a_s_s ;D By the way... there's no news on the subject actually, but some symptoms make me think MS could start again to work on a possible Cfs4 in a not so distant future... I promise I'll keep an eye on here more frequently. Cheers! Marco
